Most webmasters know that getting quality sites to link to their website is vital in order to rank well in the search engines. With that in mind many webmasters write emails to beg for links or to find others to trade with, buy links, and even if they get desperate write some descent content to add to their site hoping other will link to it.
There is also the issue of what is considered a quality link. Most webmasters feel that .gov and .edu website have a greater weight with the search engines. Sometimes they feel this is because or the age of most of these types of site. Others feel that it is because not everyone can get these sites, they are only handed out to the more trusted institutions.
With a little searching you can generally find ways to get a link from this style of site without resorting to spamming the site.
